Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 4/8-4/14

Watching some season 1 Veronica Mars in honor of the super successful Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the VM movie. I’m excited (and yes, I pledged). I’ve seen these episodes so many times, it’s the perfect background for getting some work done.

Speaking of work, it’s been overtime for me lately, so I haven’t been going to as many shows. There are some good ones next week too. I’m most excited about Curtis Peoples’ record release show on Wednesday at The Roxy. Then of course, if you’re lucky enough to have tickets, week 1 of Coachella is this weekend. It has been quite a busy week/weekend. I managed to work at least three 12 hour days last week plus catch some great shows (pictures posted soon to LMN’s facebook page). This weekend, we got the Christmas tree up and trimmed with the help of some lovely elves. Next week has the potential to be epic (you see who’s playing Thursday night at The Satellite, right?), but I worry that this cold I woke up with a couple of days ago might put a damper on things. At the moment, I can’t see past Biffy Clyro, but I’m also looking forward to Friday night at Molly Malone’s with The Honey Trees and Lakes and Nashville’s Bonnie Bishop at The Mint on Saturday.

Well…that was certainly an eventful weekend. Friday night I had a very ominous feeling before going to the El Rey to join a friend for Adam Gontier (of Three Days Grace) and Martin Sexton. At the end of the evening, I ended up in fascinating company at my fave late night eatery and I thought my gut must have been waaay off. Three hours later, sleepless and in the ER with a friend, my earlier instincts were justified.

Saturday, I cancelled my plans to participate in Tyrone Well’s music video shoot in Venice for sleep’s sake. Then it was an evening at The Rainbow Room and The Hotel Cafe with great food, friends, and music (the three essentials of any successful evening).

Today I had to cut myself off from the world and lock myself in lab as I had entered the weekend woefully behind on an important deadline at work and that I have two big presentation to give in the next seven days. This week is going to be rough…thankfully there are a few choice shows to pull me through. Here are my options:

Currently watching The Golden Globes and I have come to the conclusion that I really don’t know much about contemporary popular culture. I’m incredibly frustrated because all the commercials for interesting new TV shows give their premiere date based on something called “the super bowl”. Okay, I know what The Super Bowl is (unfortunately), but I have no clue when it is. Can you please give me an actual date associated with these shows? Not that I’ll time to watch them…

Listening to all the nominees for the best films and TV shows of the year, I realize how out of tune I am with these things. I think I’ve seen all of two movies that were mentioned the entire evening and I had no clue Matt LeBlanc or Kelsey Grammar were doing TV again. Also, when did my favorite movie stars like Julianne Moore and Kate Winslet get so old?

Sorry for the extracurricular rant. I might know more about these things if I didn’t spend my every spare moment going to shows, listening to music, writing about music, and hanging out with people talking about music, etc. But honestly, I love my life and wouldn’t have it any other way…

This weekend was supposed to be SO much fun, but I ended up spending most of it sleeping. I guess I can only run away from sickness for so long. Fortunately, before the fever descended, I was able to spend an amazing night Weds at Empire, the weekly party Semi Precious Weapons throws at On the Rox (bar above The Roxy). So many of my friends were out, celebrating a few birthdays. SPW put on a stripped down miniset, including a slower version of their new tune “Free Booze” that I might just enjoy more than the original. Finally, we all danced the night away to tunes provided by my favorite DJ (DJ High Voltage). Such a memorable night! There are only two more Empires left (this Weds and next) so if you haven’t been, be sure to get on the list and go!

As for the rest of the week, here’s my wish list. At the moment, I can’t really fathom going out, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to. So many good shows this week. You’ll have to enjoy them for me until I’m back on my feet.

Just got back from a crazy evening of awesomeness and feeling grateful for so many things: My friends for kicking me out the door and keeping me company all night, The Viper Room simply for being there, Duke’s for having some fairly amazing cuisine, my new friends for sharing some fun stories and being crazy cool, and most importantly, Dead Sara, my new band love that blew my MIND.
